Ernesto is on its last leg as a tropical cyclone. Infrared imagery shows that the storm continues to produce deep convection near the center, the byproduct of upper-air temperatures near -58C despite ocean temperatures only around 21C, but that this convection is beginning to be wisked away toward the northeast. This is a sign that Ernesto is beginning extratropical transition as it interacts with a trough approaching from the west. This transition should be complete in a few hours, and the remnants of Ernesto are likely to remain distinct until in the vicinity of the United Kingdom in 2 days where they should ultimately dissipate.
